But Who Do We Remember
KATIE MEEHAN
Collage on paper, 2021
The poppy is the enduring symbol of remembrance of the First World War. It is made from paper and circulated seasonally, which is reflected in my collage’s composition. The collage depicts the centre of a poppy, including magazine clippings that form the text that reads “We will remember them” and “But who do we remember?”. These clippings come from a magazine entitled ‘Britain at War’. The justification of this choice is to reflect the circulatory nature of a poppy, much like the circulatory and cyclical nature of a periodical magazine. Also, the physical act of travelling to a local newsagent to buy a magazine reflects the pilgrimage that one makes to their local newsagent/convenience store to purchase a poppy. This is all part of the process of Remembrance Sunday.
